Our Mission

The Gravlee Family Foundation is a private foundation organized and operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our mission is to support and strengthen the work of public charities by providing financial grants to organizations engaged in activities that promote education, relieve poverty, improve health, advance the arts, and foster community development.

Grantmaking Process

Identification

Potential grantees identified through board research, community recommendations, and nonprofit network outreach. We focus on organizations with proven impact.

Verification

We obtain IRS determination letters, confirm public charity status, and review Form 990 filings, annual reports, and program descriptions.

Review

Written proposals are submitted with project descriptions, budgets, and outcomes. The board reviews applications quarterly based on mission alignment and impact potential.

Approval

Approved grants are documented in board minutes. Funds are disbursed via check or electronic transfer within 30 days of approval.

Annual Timeline

January–March

Solicit and review grant proposals from qualified organizations.

April

First round of grant approvals and disbursements to selected grantees.

July–September

Mid-year review of grantee progress reports and outcomes assessment.

October

Second round of grant approvals and disbursements, if applicable.

December

Annual impact review and preparation of information for IRS Form 990-PF.

Monitoring & Reporting

We require grantees to submit periodic progress reports including:

  • Narrative summary of funded activities
  • Financial report of grant fund expenditures
  • Outcome metrics relevant to the project

Future funding is contingent on compliance with reporting requirements.

Compliance & Governance

The foundation adheres to all private foundation regulations:

  • Annual 5% minimum distribution requirement
  • Prohibition on self-dealing (IRC Section 4941)
  • Expenditure responsibility procedures
  • Complete and accurate grant records
  • No lobbying or political campaign activities

The board meets at least twice annually to review activities, finances, and compliance matters.
